The Michael Phelps marketing machine

After Michael Phelps won the record 8 gold medals at the 2008 Olympics in Beijing we all knew that we could expect the see the face and physique of Phelps to be plastered everywhere. But before we could finish that thought, there was already the newest Visa Go World ad with the stunning Morgan Freeman narration featuring of course - Michael Phelps. "8 gold medals - that's, that's, well ... we are going to need new adjectives for whatever that is. Congratulations Michael"

And not much time after the ad aired on TV it was already all over the internet and is there to stay. The beauty of viral marketing.

  1. Big question: did Morgan Freeman record this narration before his car wreck, or after? If it was before, I wonder how many versions they did (7 golds? 6 golds?) and what those versions said. Were there adjectives to describe winning 5 gold medals? The world may never know.

  2. John,
All these ads were certainly done prior to the Olympics in a variety of ways. There may even have been a "Hail the new king Ryan Lochte" version. :-)
